Italy’s largest cities and corresponding international airports are in Rome and Milan. Travelers often times need to get between these two cities quickly to meet other travel arrangements domestically on the ground or back in the air for international destinations. The fastest way is by Eurostar Altovelocita or the ESA trains that make the trip from Rome to Milan in as little as 3 1/2 to 4 hours. The regular Eurostar, ES and Intercity, IC trains can take from 5 to 6 1/2 hours. The cost is almost double what the IC trains charge on the fastest ESA trains. You will need to make a seat reservation but you won’t have to change trains when traveling between Rome and Milan. There’s is currently an overnight train between the two biggest cities in Italy that have sleeping facilities. This overnight passage leaves Rome about 11pm and arrives in Milan at 7am. Both Eurpostar and Intercity Trains run from early morning until midnight daily providing numerous travel time options as well as pricing.
The city of Milan has two airports with the larger Malpensa location originating most of the many international flights. Milan’s smaller airport at Linate accommodates mostly flights from other parts of Italy and Europe with no intercontinental connections. You’ll find buses connect both airports with Milan central train station that feeds all of northern Italy with a very efficient and modern rail system.
